Thank You for Coming to my Virtual NYE Twilight Zone Party!
I want to say thank you to everyone who came to this year’s party, which started on December 30th and ended on January 2nd. I saw old and new faces. I thought it was our 11th annual party but a guest corrected me and said it’s actually our 12th party! I honestly don’t know where the time has gone. I also want to thank Matt Vandermast and Mark Davitt for making this year’s party possible. Between my full-time job, weekly medical appointments, and school, it’s harder for me to host these things than it was in the past. I could not have done this without their dedication. Truly, I appreciate their initiative. I also want to thank SyFy from the bottom of my heart for doing The Twilight Zone marathon every New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. SyFy has brought happiness to so many people for decades. If you’re new, we host this party on Facebook every year. Sigh, yes I know it’s Facebook. Some people disengage from Facebook the whole year and come back just for the marathon. If you are interested in attending the marathon next New Year’s Eve, you can join the closed Facebook group here.
Origins of the Party
When I started this party over a decade ago, it was a spontaneous decision. I was bedridden on New Year’s Eve due to pain from endometriosis. I thought about all the sick and disabled people who for various reasons could not attend an in-person New Year’s Eve party. I decided that no one should be alone on New Year’s Eve (unless they want to be, of course). Over the years, people have attended for all sorts of reasons. We’ve had people attend the party while in the hospital. We’ve had people who are healthy attend because they used to watch SyFy’s marathon every year with their family but their family members are now gone. There are people who come because they want to avoid social gatherings where alcohol is present. People come from all over the world. This is a community. It feel such joy when I see people who met at my party catch up every year and exchange holiday greetings. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing how many people came this year. At the last party where such metrics were available, we had over 250 guests. You can read a decade’s worth of party recaps here.
At this year’s party I learned something new. Apparently, Saturday Night Live did a parody of the iconic TZ episode starring William Shatner called, “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet.” It’s hilarious. Check out the video below:
