4 Tips for Finding a Fabulous Fall Coat

IMG_0588Autumn will be here soon.   When the temperatures drop, we start taking more pictures in coats than shirts.  I save money by investing in a good fall coat more than shirts.   Some great coats for fall include:  solid-colored peacoats, tweed jackets, and cotton blazers.

4 Tips for Finding a Fabulous Fall Coat:

  1. Solid-colors: Prints tend to make people look wider in pictures than they look in reality–this is especially true on Prednisone (steroids commonly used to treat cancerautoimmune diseases, and respiratory disorders like asthma).  Why?  To torture us.
  2. “Go-To Color:”  As I’ve taught my past mock trial students (both male and female), it’s important to identify your go-to-color.  This is the color you always look great in.  And black doesn’t count because everyone looks great in black.  My two go-to colors are Kelly Green and Royal Blue; you can see the latter in my photograph.  Oftentimes when I have something important to do (like an interview) and I’ve spent the previous night in pain–tossing and turning until 3 am, I wear my go-to-color.  When I wear it, people can’t tell whatever is going on in my life.  They can’t tell that I’m in excruciating pain or going through a bipolar mood swing (especially depression); this is important for people with disabilities who want to look be taken seriously in the workplace.  When I wear my go-to colors, I don’t need to put on a lot of makeup because I look great instantly.  How do you find your go-to color?  Experiment.  You’ll find it’s the color that automatically makes you look fresh and great even if you feel less-than-great.Abstract Rainbow 480x320-279
  3. Understand “Winter” vs. “Summer” colors:  Winter colors are blue, green, and purple.  Summer colors are the opposite side of the rainbow: red, orange, and yellow.  Just as I look great in green, I also look great in another winter color, blue.   If you find one color that works for you, think of another one in the same palette.  Experiment.  And you’ll find it.  You can also ask a stylish friend’s opinion while shopping or trying out clothes in your closet.
  4. Bold Scarves:  Scarves are great for injecting life into an outfit.  Often, I wear a patterned scarf with my solid-colored coat.   Examples include patterns (like polka-dots) and multi-colored scarves.  For more about finding a great scarf, see my previous post here.
